Synopsis
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017) is a Netflix dark-comedy series you can watch online on iFILM. Three seasons cover all thirteen of Daniel Handler's books, with Neil Patrick Harris playing the villainous Count Olaf across every episode. Barry Sonnenfeld directed much of the first season.
The Baudelaire orphans — Violet the inventor, Klaus the reader, and infant Sunny — lose their parents in a fire and land in the care of Count Olaf, whose only interest is their fortune. He keeps changing disguises. The adults around them keep failing to notice. Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes play the older siblings; Patrick Warburton narrates as Lemony Snicket himself, appearing on screen each episode to remind viewers that things will only get worse and they should probably watch something else.
The show completed its run in 2019, making it one of the few adaptations to cover an entire book series without leaving storylines unfinished. The production design leans gothic, the humour runs dark, and a supporting cast that includes Will Arnett and Cobie Smulders keeps the tone sharp.
