One Piece has aired nonstop since 1999 — an anime from Toei Animation drawn from the manga Eiichiro Oda began back in 1997. Luffy once swallowed a strange fruit that turned his whole body to rubber: his arms stretch for hundreds of meters, yet a puddle of seawater leaves him helpless. With that "gift" he sets about hiring a crew. Under his flag gather a three-sword bounty hunter, a red-haired thief who can smell a storm coming, a cowardly tall-tale marksman, and a cook who'd die for his kitchen. Their heading: the Grand Line, a stretch of ocean that swallows more ships than it lets through.

The original manga long ago outsold every comic ever printed, and the anime has rolled past a thousand episodes.
