Synopsis

Super Mario Bros. (1993) is the first live-action Hollywood adaptation of Nintendo's iconic video game — watch it online on iFILM. Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi, played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, stumble into a parallel dimension where dinosaur evolution produced a grimy, authoritarian city-state rather than anything resembling the Mushroom Kingdom.

Dennis Hopper plays the dictator Koopa, who wants to merge that world with ours using a shard of meteorite worn around Princess Daisy's neck. The brothers have to get her out. The plot is thin, but the production design is genuinely strange — all fungal architecture and neon-lit decay — and nothing about it looks like the cheerful game it was based on.

Directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton clashed with the studio throughout production, and both Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo have described the shoot as memorably miserable. The film bombed in 1993 and set back video game adaptations for years. Seen now, it plays as a fascinatingly wrong-headed artefact of its era. Stream Super Mario Bros. (1993) on iFILM.
