Synopsis
The Pirates (2014) is a Korean fantasy action-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Lee Seok-hoon built a swashbuckling blockbuster around a simple, absurd premise: a giant whale swallows a royal seal, and half the Korean peninsula wants it back.
It's the early days of the Joseon Dynasty. China's envoy is crossing the sea with the Ming Emperor's official stamp — the one item that legitimises the new Korean throne. Then the whale strikes. A pirate captain named Yeo Wol (Son Ye-jin) sets course for the creature first, but mountain bandit Jang Sa-jung (Kim Nam-gil) has just traded his forest for a deck and isn't giving an inch. The two crews circle each other, bicker, brawl — and reluctantly team up when the real enemies appear.
At 130 minutes the film moves fast, packing sword fights, sea chases and broad comedy into a production that spent a substantial share of its budget on ocean location work and CG sequences unusual for Korean cinema at the time. Watch The Pirates (2014) in full online on iFILM.
