Denis Leary created the show and plays Tommy: freshly separated, camped in an apartment across the street from his ex-wife and their three kids, fighting off recurring visions of his cousin Jimmy who died on September 11. The firehouse squad — veterans Lou Shea and Franco Rivera, rookie Mike Lombardi — each carry their own damage but keep showing up for every call. Callie Thorne plays Tommy's ex-wife; the writing never lets either of them be simply right or wrong.
