Synopsis
Tokyo Story (東京物語, 1953) is Yasujiro Ozu's Japanese drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. An aging couple leaves their seaside town to visit their grown children in sprawling Tokyo. The children are glad to see them. Sort of.
Shukichi and Tomi (Chishu Ryu and Chieko Higashiyama) have raised a doctor son and a daughter who runs a beauty salon, and this is their first real trip to the city. Nobody has time for them. They get shipped off to a noisy spa, brushed aside, hurried along. The only one who truly welcomes them is Noriko (Setsuko Hara), the widow of the son they lost in the war, technically no longer family at all. No big drama erupts. Ordinary life does instead, which hurts more.
Ozu shoots from a near-motionless camera placed at tatami-mat height, with no swelling music or forced emotion, and out of that stillness comes one of cinema's greatest films about family. Critics have parked it at the top of all-time lists for decades. It's slow, quiet, and deeply rewarding for anyone willing to sit and pay attention. Stream Tokyo Story (1953) online on iFILM.
