Synopsis

North & South (2004) is a BBC period drama mini-series you can watch online on iFILM. It adapts Elizabeth Gaskell's Victorian novel: Margaret Hale leaves the quiet English countryside and arrives in Milton, a loud, soot-covered mill town that feels like a foreign country.

Daniela Denby-Ashe plays Margaret as someone with strong opinions and no interest in softening them. Richard Armitage is John Thornton, the cotton mill owner she instantly dismisses as a bully — and who is, just as instantly, unsettled by her. Neither of them is entirely right. A workers' strike, family grief, and a rigid class system stand between them for four tightly written episodes. The series does not stretch the tension past the point where it holds.

The production won a BAFTA and remains a favourite among fans of British costume drama. Sinéad Cusack and Tim Pigott-Smith anchor a strong supporting cast. Stream all episodes of North & South online on iFILM.
