Synopsis
The Bad Batch (2017) is Ana Lily Amirpour's desert-fried dystopia, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Out past a Texas border fence, society dumps its unwanted, and newcomer Arlen nearly ends up as another tribe's dinner.
A community of cannibals grabs her and takes an arm and a leg before she crawls free into the wasteland. There she crosses paths with a hulking, near-silent man known as Miami Man, the very kind of person who might have eaten her, and a lost little girl slowly pulls the two of them together. Off in the distance, a drugged-out commune runs on the whims of a smooth-talking guru, and the sand makes its own rules.
Suki Waterhouse and Jason Momoa carry it, with Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey and Giovanni Ribisi drifting through the edges. Amirpour moves at a heat-haze pace, all synthwave and sunburn, chasing mood over plot. It's an acquired taste: brutal, weird, hypnotic.
