Synopsis
Persepolis (2007) is a French-American animated film you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud adapted Satrapi's own graphic memoir — a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran and its aftermath.
Tehran, late 1970s. Eight-year-old Marji grows up in an educated, secular family cheering for the Shah's fall. What follows isn't liberation — it's a theocratic state, a dress code enforced by street patrols, and the long Iran-Iraq war. Her parents ship her to Vienna to keep her safe. Marji is fourteen, alone, and caught between two worlds that don't fully want her.
Voiced by Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni, and Danielle Darrieux, the film won the Cannes Jury Prize in 2007 and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. The stark black-and-white animation is a deliberate choice — it reads like a personal sketchbook, not a polished studio product. Stream Persepolis (2007) online on iFILM.
