Synopsis
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) is Wes Anderson's offbeat family comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Gene Hackman plays Royal Tenenbaum — an absentee patriarch who spent two decades estranged from the three child prodigies he helped ruin. Alec Baldwin narrates.
Each of the kids had a different kind of early genius. Chas (Ben Stiller) was trading stocks in primary school. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) wrote a celebrated play at ten. Richie (Luke Wilson) turned into a professional tennis champion. None of it stuck. Now Royal claims he has six weeks to live and moves back in — but his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) is already engaged to accountant Henry Sherman (Danny Glover), and Chas doesn't believe a word his father says. Neighbor Eli Cash (Owen Wilson) drifts in and out, writing pretentious western novels and slowly falling apart.
Anderson co-wrote the screenplay with Owen Wilson; the film won a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay. Shot for $21 million, it earned over $71 million worldwide and became the blueprint for Anderson's visual style — symmetrical frames, desaturated palettes, and a carefully curated soundtrack pulling from Elliott Smith and The Clash.
