A boy named Quinn accidentally witnesses the awakening of a creature buried beneath London for millennia. Two decades later the world is mostly ash. Quinn runs a small survivor colony inside a crumbling English castle, training people to stay low and stay quiet whenever shadows pass overhead. Gerard Butler plays his right-hand man. Food is almost gone, hope is thinner still.

Then an American armored unit rolls in. Their commander Van Zan — McConaughey, shaved head, barely leashed fury — claims he knows how to end the dragon line for good. Quinn doesn't buy it. He doesn't have the luxury of alternatives either. The two men clash before they can cooperate, and that friction drives the film's best scenes. At 101 minutes it moves fast: big creature set-pieces, mud-and-fire tension, and two very different ideas of what survival actually means.
