Synopsis

Director Charles Stone III built the film around real marching band culture — the Battle of the Bands sequences were performed live, no playback, and the rhythms hit like percussion solos should. Nick Cannon plays Devon with raw edge: the kid can't take direction, alienates teammates, and nearly throws the whole season for the sake of his own spotlight. Orlando Jones as band director Dr. Lee has seen talented loners before and has zero patience for them. Zoe Saldana plays Layla, sharp and clear-eyed, the one person who tells Devon exactly who he is without softening it.
