Synopsis
Traffic (2000) — watch online on iFILM. Steven Soderbergh's crime drama swept four Academy Awards: Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Benicio del Toro, Best Film Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The cast spans Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle, Erika Christensen, and Topher Grace.
Three storylines, three locations, no easy answers. In Washington, newly appointed drug policy chief Robert Wakefield (Douglas) prepares a harder crackdown on narcotics — then finds his own teenage daughter deep in addiction. In Mexico, a principled cop named Javier (del Toro) agrees to testify against a general working with the cartels and immediately learns how thin the line is between law and death. In San Diego, the pampered wife of an arrested trafficker (Zeta-Jones) discovers that her entire lifestyle was financed by money she chose not to trace.
Soderbergh shot each thread in a different color grade — Mexico bleached to amber, Washington chilled to clinical blue — and knit them together without a wasted scene across 147 minutes. The film adapts the 1989 British miniseries Traffik, with a screenplay by Stephen Gaghan. It argues no single policy, no single arrest, and no single family is ever just on one side of the problem.
