Stir of Echoes

Stir of Echoes (1999) — watch online on iFILM, a supernatural thriller written and directed by David Koepp, starring Kevin Bacon. Tom Witzky is a working-class Chicago man with no patience for anything he can't touch or explain. Then his sister-in-law hypnotizes him at a party, mostly as a joke.

The visions start that night. A young woman. A room. Fragments that won't add up and won't stop coming. Illeana Douglas plays the sister-in-law who opened the door; Kathryn Erbe plays Tom's wife, watching her husband start digging up the backyard at two in the morning and muttering at empty corners. Their young son seems to see the same things and finds them perfectly ordinary. Piece by piece, Tom reconstructs what happened to a girl the neighbourhood quietly agreed to forget.

The film adapts Richard Matheson's 1958 novel — the same writer behind I Am Legend and The Shrinking Man. Koepp wrote the screenplay himself and released the picture the same year as The Sixth Sense; both deal in ghosts and reluctant seers, but from completely different angles.
