About

Synopsis

Colonia (2016) is a historical thriller you can watch online on iFILM, set in Chile in the weeks after the September 1973 coup. Emma Watson plays Lena, a German flight attendant who watches her boyfriend Daniel (Daniel Brühl) dragged away by Pinochet's secret police. The only lead: he may have been transferred to Colonia Dignidad, a walled compound in the south run by Paul Schäfer, a German lay preacher who fled Europe under a cloud.

Lena volunteers to enter the colony herself. What looks like a farming commune from the outside runs on sleep deprivation, enforced silence and the threat of violence. Men and women are kept apart; no one has ever left without permission. Director Florian Gallenberger builds the film around a real place that the West German government helped keep off the international agenda for decades. Stream Colonia (2016) on iFILM — a German-French-British co-production with Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl.
