Synopsis

The People Under the Stairs (1991) is a Wes Craven horror comedy you can watch online on iFILM. A ten-year-old kid nicknamed Fool breaks into the house of his family's landlord alongside two small-time crooks. The plan: find the gold rumored to be hidden inside, save his family from eviction. The plan falls apart in the first ten minutes.

The owners — played by Everett McGill and Wendy Robie — are not eccentric. They are methodical, violent, and have been doing this for years. Fool discovers a girl named Alice who has never known anything other than this locked house, a maze of hidden corridors, and a basement full of people the owners decided to keep. Ving Rhames appears in an early role. The house itself is practically a character: booby-trapped, honeycombed with passages, impossible to navigate without the owners noticing.

Craven wrote and directed the film as a blunt fable about landlords, race, and predatory wealth — wrapped in a genre picture that earns its body count. Shot for around $6 million, it returned over $24 million at the box office. Stream The People Under the Stairs (1991) online on iFILM.
