Synopsis
Pelé: Birth of a Legend (2016) is a biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. It follows a barefoot kid from the Brazilian slums who grew into the most famous footballer alive.
The film tracks the early years of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, from kicking a sock-stuffed ball through the streets of Bauru to the day a seventeen-year-old striker steps onto the World Cup pitch in Sweden. It doesn't skip the poverty, the racism, or the way coaches tried to drill the loose, improvised "ginga" style out of him, the very playground instinct that would become his trademark on the field.
Brothers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist made their names in documentary work first, which shows in their feel for Brazilian football culture. Kevin de Paula plays the young Pelé, with Seu Jorge and Vincent D'Onofrio rounding out the cast. One for anyone who loves sports dramas built around a single make-or-break shot at a dream.
