The Ninth Gate

Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a cynical New York rare-book dealer hired by wealthy obsessive Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) to track down the other two surviving copies of a 17th-century text called The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows and determine which of the three is authentic.

Corso travels through Lisbon, Paris, and Toledo. The owners of each copy receive him with varying degrees of hostility. By the time the first one turns up dead, Corso understands this is no longer just an appraisal job. Liana Telfer (Lena Olin) wants the same book for reasons she won't explain. A mysterious young woman (Emmanuelle Seigner) shadows Corso through every city, appearing at precisely the wrong moments.
