Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow (1999) is Tim Burton's gothic mystery thriller you can watch online on iFILM. New York constable Ichabod Crane — Johnny Depp, playing him as a squeamish rationalist armed with forensic gadgets — rides into a fogbound upstate village in 1799 to explain a string of decapitations. Three bodies, no heads. The locals have an explanation: the ghost of a Hessian mercenary executed during the Revolutionary War.

Crane doesn't believe in ghosts. The evidence, unfortunately, does. Christina Ricci plays Katrina Van Tassel, whose family sits at the centre of the mystery and who shares secrets she chooses not to volunteer. Christopher Walken gets the Horseman with zero dialogue and maximum menace. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki shot the whole film in a colour palette that looks like winter ash, and Danny Elfman's score creaks like a rusted gate.

Produced by Paramount Pictures and Tim Burton Productions, the film won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
