Chihayafuru (Seasons 1–3)

Chihayafuru (ちはやふる, 2011) — watch online on iFILM. This Japanese anime spans three seasons and 74 episodes, following Chihaya Ayase as she chases the title of Japan's best female karuta player. Karuta is an old card game built on classical poetry — fast hands, sharp ears, and years of training.

Chihaya discovers the game through a quiet boy named Arata Wataya, who sees something in her that she hasn't seen in herself. Voice actress Asami Seto plays her with real momentum. In high school Chihaya builds a karuta club, pulls reluctant Taichi Mashima (Mamoru Miyano) along with her, and keeps hoping to face Arata again across a card mat. The matches are tense and quick. Everything else — friendship, distance, unspoken feelings — runs underneath.

The series is adapted from Yuki Suetsugu's manga, running in Be Love magazine since 2007. Madhouse animated seasons one and two; Brain's Base handled the third.
