Synopsis
Il Divo (2008) is Paolo Sorrentino's Italian political drama you can watch online on iFILM. Its subject is Giulio Andreotti, the man who ran Italy seven times and was, for decades, a living synonym for power itself. Stooped, soft-spoken, hidden behind thick glasses, he almost never raises his voice. That stillness is exactly what makes him terrifying.
The early 1990s. The old order is collapsing around Andreotti (Toni Servillo): rumored ties to Cosa Nostra surface, allies die, former mobsters start to talk, and prosecutors close in. Sorrentino refuses to march through a biography date by date. He builds the portrait out of shadow, whispers and jagged editing, scoring assassinations to blaring music while his subject prowls darkened corridors, unable to sleep.
Toni Servillo turns a nearly motionless face into a whole theater, and the film took the Jury Prize at Cannes for both that performance and its style. This isn't cinema that explains itself to you, but if you like cold, mocking power studied up close, don't skip it. Stream Il Divo (2008) online on iFILM.
