Synopsis
La Vie en Rose (2007) is a French biographical drama directed by Olivier Dahan, available to watch online on iFILM. Marion Cotillard plays Édith Piaf, a performance that landed her the Academy Award for Best Actress, a Golden Globe, and a César — one of the most complete sweeps of awards-season history for a foreign-language performance.
The film does not march through Piaf's life in order. Scenes jump between a childhood in the poverty of Belleville, her grandmother's brothel in Normandy, discovery by cabaret owner Louis Leplée in 1935, the carnage of losing boxer Marcel Cerdan in a 1949 plane crash, and the arthritic, barely-upright figure still commanding the stage of the Paris Olympia. Cotillard ages across three decades in a single film, and the physical transformation is not prosthetics for their own sake — it is how the performance communicates what the body costs a life like Piaf's.
Gérard Depardieu and Emmanuelle Seigner appear in supporting roles. Director Dahan's decision to use Piaf's actual recordings rather than new vocal performances is what ties the fragmented structure together — that voice is the constant. Co-produced by Légende Films, the film remains the definitive screen portrait of France's most beloved chanteuse. Stream La Vie en Rose (2007) online on iFILM.
