Malcolm's assignment: trail an escaped bank robber who's expected to contact his ex-girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long). Sherry is heading to stay with her grandmother — a large, loud, and deeply opinionated woman known as Big Momma. When Big Momma leaves town at exactly the wrong moment, Malcolm borrows her identity wholesale. Fat suit, wig, apron. He moves in, keeps the neighborhood at bay, cooks for the church ladies, and waits for the criminal to show up. Paul Giamatti plays his exasperated partner watching all of this unfold from a surveillance van.
