Amy

Amy (2015) is Asif Kapadia's documentary about singer Amy Winehouse, and you can watch it online on iFILM. There's no narrator and no talking-head interviews on camera. Kapadia built the whole film from home video, camcorder footage and Amy's own voice on the soundtrack.

It starts with a teenager from north London cracking jokes for a friend's lens, and follows her to the point where paparazzi swarmed every step she took. Her lyrics scroll across the screen as she sings, so you watch each line grow straight out of whatever was wrecking her that month. Around her: producer Mark Ronson, who shaped the sound of Back to Black, jazz legend Tony Bennett, her father Mitch and husband Blake, whose name runs through her darkest songs.

Rather than march through dates, Kapadia lets the tapes pile up until the cost of fame becomes unbearable to sit with.
