About

Synopsis

You've Got Mail (1998) is a Warner Bros. romantic comedy — watch it online on iFILM. Director Nora Ephron reunited Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks for the third time, placing them in New York's Upper West Side where a slow-burn anonymous email romance runs parallel to an all-out business war.

Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) runs a small children's bookshop her mother left her. Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) is the heir to a chain of book superstores — and he's about to open one right around the corner that will almost certainly put her out of business. They despise each other in person. Online, using screen names, they've quietly told each other things neither would admit to anyone else. Greg Kinnear and Parker Posey play their increasingly neglected real-world partners.

Ephron drew from a 1937 Hungarian play and the 1940 Hollywood film The Shop Around the Corner, updating the letters to AOL inboxes with a very specific New York energy. The film grossed $250 million worldwide and turned the "you've got mail" notification sound into a cultural shortcut for a particular kind of longing. Stream You've Got Mail (1998) on iFILM.
