Synopsis
The Wandering Earth (流浪地球, 2019) is a Chinese science-fiction epic from director Guo Fan that you can watch online on iFILM. The Sun is dying and will swallow the planet within a century, so humanity attempts the impossible: pushing the entire Earth out of its orbit.
Thousands of towering engines are built across the globe to shove the planet away from the Solar System, beginning a journey of roughly 2,500 years toward a new star. Survivors live in vast underground cities. Young Liu Qi sneaks his sister up to the frozen surface and lands in the middle of a disaster: during a gravitational slingshot past Jupiter, Earth drifts off course and starts falling toward the gas giant. His estranged father, an astronaut aboard the orbiting station, becomes the one person able to act. Wu Jing leads the cast.
Adapted from a novella by Liu Cixin, author of The Three-Body Problem, the film became one of the highest-grossing releases in Chinese box-office history. Spectacle outweighs character here: a frozen Shanghai, city-sized thrusters, Jupiter filling the sky. Fans of large-scale disaster sci-fi in the vein of Interstellar will find plenty to chew on.
