The letters send Holly on a series of tasks: some practical, some reckless, all designed to push her back toward living. Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon play her closest friends; Kathy Bates is her mother. Jeffrey Dean Morgan appears as a stranger Holly meets along the way.

Part of the film was shot on location in Connemara, western Ireland — the landscape carries real weight in scenes that could easily have felt maudlin. Made for $30 million, it earned well over $150 million worldwide.
