When fired CIA analyst Osborne Cox (Malkovich) starts writing his memoirs, a disc of his drafts gets left behind in a gym locker room. Fitness employees Linda (McDormand) and Chad (Pitt) find it and convince themselves they're sitting on classified government material. Chad throws himself into the role of a spy with bewildering enthusiasm. Linda just wants enough money for cosmetic surgery. Neither has any idea what they're actually holding — and the amateur blackmail scheme they cook up spirals in directions no one, least of all the CIA desk officers monitoring the whole mess, can follow.
