Synopsis
The Dig (2021) is a British historical drama from Simon Stone you can watch online on iFILM. It's the summer of 1939, war only weeks away, when wealthy widow Edith Pretty hires self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown to examine the mounds on her Suffolk estate.
Beneath those grassy hills, Brown uncovers something that rewrites Britain's distant past: the buried Anglo-Saxon ship at Sutton Hoo. The find draws other appetites at once, as museum men jockey over who gets the credit while the shadow of the coming war settles over everyone. Carey Mulligan plays Edith with quiet fragility, Ralph Fiennes is the reticent Brown, and Lily James and Johnny Flynn carry a thread of private longing.
Adapted from John Preston's novel about the real 1939 discovery, this is slow, autumnal filmmaking about time, mortality, and what outlasts us. Cinematographer Mike Eley catches that long English light until the soil itself seems to breathe. One for anyone who loves unhurried period drama in the Downton Abbey vein.
