Cris Johnson (Cage) performs low-budget magic in Las Vegas under a fake name. His actual skill is narrower than it sounds: he can see exactly two minutes into his own future. No further, no one else's. Enough to dodge surveillance and beat the house at cards, but not enough to stay off the government's radar. FBI agent Callie Ferris (Moore) tracks him down because a terrorist cell is moving a nuclear device toward Los Angeles, and Cris is the only person alive who might see the detonation before it happens.

The screenplay draws loosely from Philip K. Dick's 1954 short story "The Golden Man." Peter Falk appears in a small supporting role.
