Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) breaks an ancient truce between humanity and the hidden world, seeking to reactivate the Golden Army — an indestructible mechanical force put to sleep centuries ago. Hellboy (Ron Perlman) leads the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense into the underground: pyrokinetic Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), and the new ectoplasmic agent Johann Krauss, voiced by Seth MacFarlane. Hellboy's real problem is that some of the creatures he's supposed to stop feel more like kin than enemies.

Del Toro designed over 70 original creature types for the film, built a full-scale Troll Market set, and brought in conceptual artists Brian Froud and Wayne Barlowe to shape the hidden world's look.
