Ted Mosby is telling his kids the story of how he met their mother. It takes him nine years, almost entirely because he keeps getting in his own way. Josh Radnor plays Ted as a hopeless romantic who treats every relationship like it might be the last chapter. Barney Stinson — Neil Patrick Harris at full throttle — runs on schemes, tailored suits and a carefully maintained philosophy about dating. Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) are already together, which makes them the fixed point everything else orbits. And then there's Robin, played by Cobie Smulders, who keeps appearing at exactly the wrong moment.
