Synopsis

Caligula (Caligola, 1979) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Tinto Brass helmed this Italian-American production — 156 minutes, Penthouse Films International — with Malcolm McDowell in the title role, alongside Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, and John Gielgud. The screenplay was written by Gore Vidal.

When Tiberius dies, young Gaius Caesar steps onto a throne Rome hoped would mean freedom. It does not. McDowell's Caligula moves from a prince eager to please his court to a ruler who has learned that absolute fear and absolute power feel identical. His bond with sister Drusilla, the counsel of an aging Nerva (John Gielgud), and his companion Caesonia (Helen Mirren) circle a man whose capacity for cruelty grows with every unchallenged decree.

The film circulated in several edits for decades; The Ultimate Cut arrived in 2024. It remains one of the most debated artifacts of 1970s European art cinema. Watch Caligula (1979) online on iFILM.
