Edgin (Chris Pine) is a charming bard and reformed thief who breaks out of prison only to find his old partner Forge (Hugh Grant, perfectly slippery) has seized a city and taken custody of Edgin's daughter. Reassembling a crew is easy enough — warrior Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), chronically self-doubting sorcerer Simon (Justice Smith), and shapeshifting druid Doric (Sophia Lillis) all come along. Having a plan is another matter.

Regé-Jean Page rounds out the cast as the impossibly competent paladin Xenk. The film is stacked with creatures straight from the Monster Manual and spells that follow actual D&D rules — a detail fans will catch immediately. Smart, self-aware and genuinely entertaining.
