The foul-mouthed living teddy bear Ted (voiced by MacFarlane) is back, newly married to Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) and dead set on adopting a child — which turns out to require proving in a Massachusetts court of law that he is, in fact, a person and not property.

Mark Wahlberg returns as John, Ted's loyal and reliably dim best friend, and Amanda Seyfried joins as Samantha, a civil rights lawyer who takes the case mostly because she has never heard anything like it. Morgan Freeman appears as a veteran attorney brought in for the big courtroom push. Liam Neeson delivers a genuinely odd cameo in a grocery store. Patrick Stewart narrates. The film bounces from a fertility clinic disaster to a New York Comic Con brawl to a break-in at Tom Brady's house, pausing occasionally to ask what legally separates a conscious being from an object — a question the script treats with about the seriousness it deserves.
