IO
In the near future we must save Earth or leave it
Synopsis
IO (2019) is an American science fiction film directed by Jonathan Helpert — watch online on iFILM. Earth's atmosphere has turned toxic. Most of humanity has already fled to orbital stations near Jupiter's moon Io, and the last shuttle off the surface is days away.
Sam (Margaret Qualley) is a young scientist who stayed behind, alone at a mountaintop research station. She is trying to find evidence that humans can adapt to the changed air — that leaving is not the only answer. Then a stranger named Micah (Anthony Mackie) arrives by hot-air balloon, racing to catch that final flight out. The film turns on the conversation between them: two people who have reached opposite conclusions about whether Earth is worth saving.
Director Helpert keeps the pace deliberately slow — long silences, burnt hillsides, more Beethoven than explosions. Danny Huston appears in a supporting role. IO is not a disaster film; it is closer to a philosophical two-hander set against a dying landscape.
