Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody comes home after eight years in captivity and the country calls him a hero. Carrie is the one person who doesn't believe it. She is convinced he was turned — and she begins an unauthorized surveillance operation to prove it. The catch: Carrie manages her own bipolar disorder in secret, which means her judgment is always in question, even when she's right. Brody moves into politics, further complicating everything.

Claire Danes won three consecutive Emmy Awards for the role. The series outlasted the Brody storyline, shifting its focus to Berlin, Lagos, Kabul, and finally Moscow — each arc a different angle on intelligence work and its personal cost.
