The Woman in Black

The villagers answer his questions with stony silence and hurry their children indoors. A recent widower himself, Kipps digs into the estate's past and pieces together a grim pattern: every time the figure appears, a child in the village dies.

Daniel Radcliffe took his first grown-up dramatic lead here after Harry Potter, carrying nearly every scene on his own. The film was made by a revived Hammer studio from Susan Hill's novel, trading cheap jolts for creaking floorboards, fog and toys that move by themselves.
