Carrie White is the girl everyone at school loves to torment, and home offers no relief: her mother is a religious zealot who treats any joy as sin. Since childhood Carrie has carried a strange ability — objects shift and slide on their own whenever fear or anger takes hold of her. The harder the world pushes, the stronger that power grows. Then her classmates set up a cruel prank at the senior prom, badly misjudging what a cornered girl can do.

Peirce reworks the same material Brian De Palma first filmed back in 1976. Moretz plays Carrie less as a monster than as a teenager who has simply run out of patience, while Moore turns the controlling mother into something genuinely frightening.
