Synopsis
Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) is a British-French period drama directed by Peter Webber — watch online on iFILM. Adapted from Tracy Chevalier's novel, it imagines the story behind Johannes Vermeer's most famous canvas: a young maid named Griet who arrives at the painter's house in Delft and quietly becomes his subject.
Scarlett Johansson plays Griet as a girl who reads colour and composition instinctively, without a lesson in her life. Colin Firth is Vermeer — absorbed, unreachable, attending to the world only through a lens of paint and light. The tension between them builds almost without dialogue. Cinematographer Eduardo Serra frames the film like a series of Dutch Golden Age paintings: window light falling on linen, shadows pooling at the edges. Tom Wilkinson plays the wealthy patron pulling the strings, and a young Cillian Murphy rounds out the triangle.
The film earned three Oscar nominations for its technical craft — cinematography, production design and costume design — and they were deserved.
