Synopsis
The Perfection (2018) is a psychological thriller directed by Richard Shepard — watch it online on iFILM. Cellist Charlotte was once the star pupil of an elite music academy. Then she disappeared for a decade to care for her dying mother, while the school moved on without her.
When her mother finally dies, Charlotte tracks down her former mentors Anton and Paloma at a Shanghai audition. There she meets Lizzie — the new prodigy, played by Logan Browning — and the two women slip into an unsettling closeness that spills over into a road trip through rural China. Something goes badly wrong in those back roads.
What makes the film work is its structure: it resets its own premise two or three times, each twist retroactively changing what you thought you just watched. Allison Williams plays Charlotte with a controlled unease that only makes sense in retrospect.
