Synopsis

The Chorus (Les Choristes, 2004) is a French drama by Christophe Barratier you can watch online on iFILM. The year is 1949. Out of work, music teacher Clément Mathieu takes a post as a supervisor at a grim boarding school for troubled boys.

The place runs on fear. Headmaster Rachin answers every misstep with the detention cell and the cane, and the boys only grow harder. Mathieu tries something else and quietly builds a choir out of these little troublemakers. One of them, the withdrawn Pierre Morhange, turns out to have an extraordinary voice, and through singing a boy everyone had written off begins to change. Gérard Jugnot plays the teacher with no grand speeches, just a man who refuses to raise his hand.

A box-office phenomenon in France, the film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, while Bruno Coulais's score for boys' choir took on a life of its own. It is a small, warm story about how one adult can rewrite a child's future. Stream The Chorus (2004) online on iFILM.
