Synopsis
La Strada (1954) is Federico Fellini's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A poor mother sells her naïve, childlike daughter Gelsomina to Zampanò, a brutish travelling strongman, and the girl becomes his assistant in a threadbare roadside act.
Zampanò snaps an iron chain across his chest for spare change while Gelsomina bangs a drum, clowns and passes the hat. He is rough, cold, quick with his fists. She stays because there is nowhere else to go. Their little cart rolls across the dusty roads of postwar Italy, town to town, and somewhere on that endless route a strange, painful bond forms between two people who can neither live together nor apart. The arrival of a light-footed, mocking tightrope walker known as the Fool shatters their fragile balance.
Giulietta Masina, Fellini's wife, plays Gelsomina opposite Anthony Quinn as Zampanò, with Nino Rota's aching trumpet theme threaded through it all. The film handed Fellini his first Oscar in the foreign-language category and remains one of Italian cinema's most piercing studies of cruelty, guilt and regret that comes too late. The final scene lands like a blow and stays with you for years. Stream La Strada (1954) online on iFILM.
