Death Note

High schooler Light Turner picks up a black notebook that drops out of the sky. The rules are short and chilling: write a name, picture the face, and that person dies. The book comes with Ryuk, a grinning death god voiced by Willem Dafoe. With classmate Mia at his side, Light starts executing criminals under the alias "Kira" — until a faceless prodigy detective known only as L starts hunting him. Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley and Lakeith Stanfield lead the cast.

Director Adam Wingard (You're Next, The Guest) reshapes the story into a gory American thriller, keeping the elaborate kills the anime is famous for. Purists argue over the liberties it takes, but as a standalone cat-and-mouse game between a teenager with a death god on his shoulder and a nameless investigator, it pulls you along.
