The Legend of 1900

The Legend of 1900 (1998) is an Italian drama-music film by Giuseppe Tornatore — watch it online on iFILM. Tim Roth plays a man known only as 1900, born on New Year's Day aboard the ocean liner SS Virginia. A stoker named Danny Boodman found the infant in a crate and raised him as his own, never registering the boy with any country.

1900 spent his entire life between the ship's decks, never once walking on dry land. He taught himself piano with no sheet music, no teachers, no theory — and played circles around every musician who stepped into the first-class saloon, including Jelly Roll Morton in a famous head-to-head duel. Trumpeter Max Tooney, played by Pruitt Taylor Vince, witnessed it all and carried the story long after the ship fell silent.

Tornatore adapted the film from Alessandro Baricco's one-man stage play, and Ennio Morricone's score turns every scene into something close to a conversation between the keys and the Atlantic.
