Jill McBain arrives in the dusty town of Flagstone expecting a new life. She finds her husband's family slaughtered instead. The man behind it is Frank — a cold-eyed killer hired by railroad tycoon Morton, who needs that piece of land cleared. Two unlikely men step in: outlaw Cheyenne and a drifter known only as Harmonica, who carries a years-old grievance against Frank that has nothing to do with Jill. Ennio Morricone composed each character's theme before a single frame was shot, so the actors could hear their own music on set.
