About

Synopsis

Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫, 1997) is a Studio Ghibli animated epic by Hayao Miyazaki — watch it online on iFILM. Released on July 12, 1997, it ran for 134 minutes and briefly held the record as the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history.

Young Emishi warrior Ashitaka (voiced by Yoji Matsuda) kills a rampaging boar-god and takes a death curse as payment. He rides west to find a cure and lands in the middle of a war: Lady Eboshi (Yuko Tanaka) is clearing ancient forest to fuel her ironworks, and the forest gods are fighting back. Among them is San (Yuriko Ishida), raised by a wolf goddess and convinced that humanity is a plague. Neither side is entirely wrong. That's the whole point.

Miyazaki gives everyone a reason and no one a clean conscience. Eboshi shelters lepers and frees women from brothels. The forest gods crush people without hesitation. Ashitaka keeps trying to find a middle ground while his cursed arm pulls him toward murder. Composer Joe Hisaishi's score matches every shift in tone. Watch Princess Mononoke (1997) online on iFILM.
