The Lost Daughter

A loud family arrives on the same beach. One of them, a young mother named Nina struggling with her restless little girl, pulls Leda's attention and won't let go. Watching Nina drags Leda's own past into the open: the exhausting early years with two daughters, the guilt, and a choice she has never fully owned. Olivia Colman plays Leda in the present, Jessie Buckley plays her younger self, with Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, Paul Mescal and Peter Sarsgaard filling out the coast.

Adapted from Elena Ferrante's novel, this is Maggie Gyllenhaal's directing debut, and it took the screenplay prize at Venice while Colman landed an Oscar nomination.
