Synopsis

Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999) is a Cartoon Network animated series you can watch online on iFILM. Created by John R. Dilworth, with Marty Grabstein voicing the title character, the show ran for four seasons — 52 episodes between 1999 and 2002.

Courage is a small pink dog found as a puppy and adopted by kind Muriel Bagge and her grouchy husband Eustace. They live in a farmhouse outside Nowhere, Kansas — and Nowhere is accurate. Monsters, aliens, ghosts, mad scientists, and things that should not exist arrive on a near-weekly basis. Courage sees everything coming, panics about all of it, and then saves Muriel anyway while Eustace barely looks up from his chair.

The series grew out of Dilworth's 1996 short The Chicken from Outer Space, which received an Academy Award nomination. He brought early CGI into the horror sequences at a time when most cartoons were staying far from it, giving the show a visual texture that still unsettles. Courage the Cowardly Dog plays as a children's cartoon on the surface and as something closer to psychological horror underneath — which explains why so many adults came back to it years later.
