Synopsis
Out of Africa (1985) is Sidney Pollack's biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Meryl Streep plays Karen Blixen, the Danish writer who left Europe behind and spent years running a coffee farm in colonial Kenya. Robert Redford co-stars as Dennis Finch Hatton. The screenplay draws on Blixen's 1937 memoir of the same name.
Karen arrives in early-20th-century Nairobi for a marriage of convenience with Baron Bror Blixen, played by Klaus Maria Brandauer — charming, unreliable, and almost never home. She throws herself into farming on the slopes of the Ngong Hills, navigating drought, locusts, difficult finances, and the complex tensions of colonial East Africa. Finch Hatton drifts in and out of her life: a free-spirited big-game hunter who refuses every kind of permanence. Their connection deepens against a landscape so vast it makes personal choices feel both tiny and enormous.
Pollack's film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Cinematographer David Watkins shot the Kenyan plains in long, unhurried takes that still hold up. At 161 minutes the film runs long by design — it is a memory, not a plot. Stream Out of Africa (1985) in full on iFILM.
